The USC Alumni Club of San Gabriel Valley and USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences are pleased to announce A Day at the Huntington Featuring “Blue Sky Metropolis: The Aerospace Century in Southern California" on Sunday, January 8th. This exhibit is part of the Aerospace History Project, an initiative of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West.
Please join us for a day at the Huntington to view this exciting exhibit and the many other interesting exhibits and gardens established by Henry Huntington. USC’s Dr. Peter Westwick will present photos and documents from his research on the intersections between aerospace and California culture. The private presentation will begin at 2:00 PM in Friends Hall, which is adjacent to the entry kiosk. Please meet in front of Friends Hall for the speech at 1:45 p.m.
The aerospace industry’s impact on Southern California in the 20th century—and vice versa—will be explored in a new exhibition at The Huntington this fall. “Blue Sky Metropolis: The Aerospace Century in Southern California” recounts that transformative era through approximately 50 manuscripts, documents, and photographs drawn from The Huntington’s growing collection of aerospace- related materials and other private and public collections.
Drawings and photographs on view in the exhibition will show how the skeletons of planes and wings changed over time, fromLockheed’s Vega made of wood circa 1929 to its U-2 spy plane in the 1950s to its titanium SR-71 Blackbird in the 1960s. Among the works on display will be a number of materials from the collection of Ben Rich, who as director of the Lockheed Skunk Works oversaw the development of the F-117 Stealth fighter. In addition to archival documents and images, the exhibition will feature a number of aerospace artifacts, including a rocket engine, early satellite prototypes, and a replica of an engineer’s desk with drawing implements, slide rules, notebooks, blue-prints, and other tools of the trade.
Admission includes a full-day at the Huntington Library & Gardens. The Huntington opens at 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM on Sundays. Adults admission is $14 (regular $20); Students (age 12-18, or with full-time student I.D.) are $10; children age 5-11 are $6; and Huntington members and children under age 5 are free.
Parking is free at The Huntington, and no parking reservations are necessary.
Location: The Huntington Library, Art Collections & Botanical Gardens 1151 Oxford Road San Marino, CA 91108-1218
